Stay informed about the general proposal for the restriction of PFAS with Samaro.

PFAS, commonly known as “forever chemicals,” are chemical substances used in various industries and everyday products. These persistent compounds raise concerns for human health and ecosystems due to their long-lasting presence in the environment.

With over 4,000 different chemical compounds, PFAS are utilized for their anti-adhesive, waterproofing, and heat-resistant properties. Since the 1950s, they have been extensively used in textiles, food packaging, firefighting foams, non-stick coatings, cosmetics, and pesticides, among others.

These substances contain highly stable chemical bonds, leading to slow degradation after use or release into the environment. As a result, PFAS end up in waste and spread through air, soil, and water.

Particular attention is given to PFAS compounds such as PFOA and PFOS, which exhibit high persistence in the environment, raising concerns about their impact on human health and ecosystems.

Samaro’s Commitment to Responsible Chemistry

Samaro informs you about the proposal for a general restriction on PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, under the European REACH regulation.

In February 2023, the national authorities of Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark submitted a proposal to limit the use of PFAS in accordance with the EU REACH regulation.

The final decision regarding these REACH restrictions is made by the European Commission in collaboration with the authorities of EU member states. This decision also undergoes scrutiny by the European Parliament and Council. According to the ECHA, the new restriction on PFAS is expected to potentially come into effect in 2025.

Below is an estimated step-by-step schedule for the proposed general restriction of PFAS:
