The importance of proper surface preparation before applying DOWSIL™ 732:
All surfaces must be clean and dry. Degrease and remove any contaminants that may affect adhesion. Socomore brand solvents are highly suitable.
Primerless adhesion can be achieved on many substrates such as glass, metals, and most technical plastics. Substrates where good adhesion is generally not achieved include PTFE, polyethylene, polypropylene, and related materials.
However, for maximum adhesion, the use of DOWSIL™ 1200 OS primer is recommended. After solvent cleaning, apply a thin layer of DOWSIL™ 1200 OS primer by dipping, brushing, or spraying. Allow the primer to dry for 15 to 90 minutes at room temperature and a relative humidity of 50% or more.
How to apply DOWSIL™ 732:
Apply the multipurpose DOWSIL™ 732 sealant on one of the prepared surfaces, then quickly cover it with the other substrate to be bonded.
Upon contact with moisture, the freshly applied material will form a “skin.” All smoothing should be done before this skin forms. The surface can be easily smoothed with a spatula. The adhesive/sealant will be dry to the touch in less than 45 minutes.
Curing time:
After the skin forms, curing continues inward from the surface. In 24 hours (at room temperature and 50% relative humidity), the multipurpose DOWSIL™ 732 sealant will cure to a depth of about 3 mm. Very deep sections, especially when access to atmospheric moisture is restricted, will take longer to cure completely. Curing time is extended at lower humidity levels.
Before handling and packaging bonded components, users are advised to wait a sufficiently long time to ensure the integrity of the adhesive is not affected. This will depend on many factors and should be determined by the user for each specific application.
