Optical silicones are used to manufacture primary lenses with multi-segment LED light sources for adaptive high beam (ADB) to improve driver and road safety. ADB technology allows drivers to keep their high beams on at all times because the system automatically adjusts the intensity according to changing traffic and road conditions.
Dark or low-light conditions increase the likelihood of a collision. Driving in darkness accounts for 25% of car trips, but 52% of driver fatalities and 71% of pedestrian fatalities.

LED lighting for streets and roads :
VS Lighting (VosslohSchwabe Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany) has designed a cost-effective module with high ingress and impact protection ratings (IP67, IP69K, IK08). The optical silicon and silicone adhesive used in the LED module feature high resistance to UV light and external shock. It is important to note that PDMS-based materials are permeable to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), thus avoiding contamination of the LED chip or its light conversion phosphor layer.
Outdoor automotive applications :
SoundOff Signal (Hudsonville, MI) designed an LED lighting module for emergency vehicles using two optical LSRs. Here, the specially designed clear lens is molded from SILASTIC MS-1002 moldable silicone. This lens is then co-molded with SILASTIC MS-0002 moldable silicone to form the housing. The LED module has a small footprint with “maximized candela output”, exceptional resistance to damage such as gravel pitting, improved sealing performance to prevent water ingress, and high UV and photothermal stability to prevent lens yellowing.
